You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Many people spend their lives walking around with a story of shame.

It usually begins with, if only…

  •  I was better at…
  • I looked more like …
  • I had more …

Then I would be happy. As a result, we spend much of our waking hours forcing ourselves to become a better or "right" version of ourselves.

Yet there is a deep loneliness to this storytelling: a sense of isolation, in spite of needing to be seen on the deepest level, to be loved and understood, just as we are.

My work as a marriage and family therapist registered intern (#86845) involves letting what ails—from anxiety and depression, to obsessional thinking, insomnia, overeating, as well as the accompanying feelings like loneliness, despair, guilt, shame, and fear—be guideposts that inform how we can work toward the root of not enough-ness and change the story into one in which you recognize that you are inherently lovable. As you begin to grow, coming into conscious contact with these stories that prevent you from feeling and being loved, we can initiate an authentic relationship with the self built on love, compassion, and trust.

We do this by carving out a safe and caring space to explore the unconscious messages underneath the symptoms, finding and crafting new meanings, and in turn, befriending what feels uncomfortable or maybe flat out unbearable. The work is not fast, and oftentimes it gets messy before it gets better, but on the other side of this exploration is a heart-felt relationship with oneself and the various parts of you that have been needing attention.
